Juneteenth Represents the Progress of Our Nation

Some of my fellow writers and I recently visited with editors at our local newspaper. We talked about possible content for upcoming pieces focusing on Black topics and the Black community in New Mexico.

I wrote about Juneteenth in the wake of the mass murder in Buffalo, NY. You can check it out at the Albuquerque Journal here and the New Mexico Black Leadership Council blog here.

Here’s me totally geeking out next to a bronze statue of a paper boy.

  1. It appears to me that we, as a culture, suffer from a deep narcissism combined with tribalism that results in a profound inability to listen or respect. Juneteenth could be compared to July 4th for a segment of our population. And it is so important to acknowledge systemic mistreatment. But that seems a bridge too far in US dialogue.
