The date of opening night for the Bob Marley biopic, One Love, was on my calendar for weeks. I still remember the first time my mom brought home a Bob Marley record. Songs I’d never heard before, like “No Woman No Cry” and the original “I Shot the Sheriff”, bathed my afternoon in green and gold. I discovered gold the sad day decades later when I cleared out Mom’s home and found four Marley CDs. Playing them helped me feel closer to her in the wake of her passing. So I was pumped to see the movie, starring Kingsley Ben-Adir (High Fidelity, One Night in Miami). Though One Love set the Valentine’s Day opening record with a $14 million gross, two days after seeing the movie, I finally admitted to myself that I found it disappointing. I wrote about if for the New Mexico Black Leadership Council’s UpLift Chronicles. You can check it out here.
