Shannon’s Reading List: After the Rain

After the Rain is a graphic novel adapted from a story by Nnedi Okorafor and is a creepy spooky season read.

Talk about doin’ it for the culture.

Main character Chioma opens the door of her grandmother’s house during a rainstorm in southeast Nigeria and immediately wishes she hadn’t. The story starts off creepy and the creepitude just keeps building.

The artwork, how all the pages are framed with extensions of the unsettling elements really intensifies the —you got it—creepy AF factor. It’s got some body horror that might make some squeamish.

I enjoyed the setting and the integration of Nigerian folklore.

The ending takes a turn I didn’t expect.

I think the story has interesting things to say about the ways in which trauma is carried around inside of us.
