I downloaded this book immediately after I saw the recent biopic about Whitney Houston. Now that I have finished it, I scarce know what to do with myself.

This is a lyrical, accessible dive into Whitney Houston’s, life, talent, gift, and influence. The author interrogates the treatment of Whitney Houston by the press and public, and ties this to the recent reckoning about how we treat celebrities, particularly female celebrities and Black female celebrities.

This biography is set against a rich backdrop of the social, racial, sexual, and political dynamics in play in the nation and the world during Whitney Houston’s time on earth.

Highly recommend.
